Labor Day weekend is one of the biggest weekends out of the year for downtown Matthews – here are a few things to know and check out (with a bit of a slant toward Carolina Beer Temple activities :))
FIRST THURSDAY – SEPT 3rd
The First Thursday of every month is a reason to celebrate in downtown Matthews as local businesses all try to do something special for the night – retail specials, drink specials, food specials, live music, fundraisers and more! This months First Thursday is expected to be the biggest and best yet!
Be sure to check out the Arts & Crafts pop-up market on the Town Green in front of Town Hall, plus Live Music at the gazebo and more!
At Carolina Beer Temple we will be hosting Birdsong Brewery in a tap takeover extravaganza! We will have SIX Birdsong beers on tap including a tap room exclusive Three Little Birds Belgian Tripel! Plus Eat a Peach, Fake Plastic Trees, Jalapeno Pale Ale, Lazy Bird Brown and Higher Ground! Flights of 4 will be $6 and flights of 6 will be $8! And it’s a fundraiser…
Noah Hays, a talented goalkeeper for both Providence High School and Turn and Burn Lacrosse, has spent the last few weeks at Levine Children’s Hospital of Charlotte, NC battling Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma Cancer (RHS). He was able to return home on August 12th and will continue chemotherapy and radiation for over a year.
On Thursday September 3rd, as part of downtown Matthews’ First Thursday festivities, Carolina Beer Temple and several other businesses in downtown Matthews will be hosting a fundraiser for Noah. Donations will go toward Noah’s medical expenses.
Carolina Beer Temple, Salon 131, X-S Hair, The Black Chicken Wine Cellar, Beantown Tavern and Royal Cafe & Creperie will all be participating in the fundraising event!
PLUS – We will have a LIVE MUSIC at the gazebo on the Town Green in honor of Noah along with a booth where cash donations can also be made! Our First Thursday Arts & Crafts Pop-up market will also be located on the Town Green during this event!
Carolina Beer Temple will be donating $1 of every pint and flight sold during their Birdsong Brewing Tap Takeover!
Beantown Tavern will be donating $1 of every pint sold!
Salon 131 and X-S Hair will donate 100% of their proceeds ($20 minimum donation for a haircut and $10 for yellow hair extensions). Contact Angela at 704-321-2827 to make your reservation!
The Black Chicken Wine Cellar will be donating $2 for every glass of wine sold.
Royal Cafe & Creperie will be donating $1 of every coffee or lemonade sold!

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 5th- MATTHEWS ALIVE FESTIVAL CONTINUES
Labor Day Parade
Check out one of the biggest Labor Day parades in the southeast as it meanders through downtown Matthews. Parade starts at 10:30AM! Live Music and cold beer behind Moe’s BBQ immediately following the parade.
Ride the Trolley – Sat Sept 5th 2 – 8PM
From 2PM – 8PM the Red Brick Partnership is sponsoring FREE RIDES on the TROLLEY! The Trolley rides will begin near the John and Trade Street intersection across from Exxon. The FREE RIDE will take you along John Street to Ames Street, then over to North End near the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Which Wich and Jet’s Pizza. Then to Town Hall and on to Carolina Beer Temple. Another stop will be made near Moe’s BBQ and then the public parking lot along the rail road tracks!
Along the way you will hear historical facts about downtown Matthews, along with details of the businesses in operation along the route. Feel free to hop off the trolley at any stop – it’ll be back around every 10-15 minutes so you can hop back on!
Live Music & NoDa Beers at Moe’s Original BBQ – SAT Sept 5th 12-9PM
Carolina Beer Temple is partnering with Moe’s BBQ to bring you THREE live bands, plus NoDa beers all day long in the grass behind Moe’s BBQ. Music will begin around Noon with Trouble Creek Bluegrass, followed by Sinners & Saints and finishing from 6-9PM with Blind Manifest! NoDa CAVU and Gordgeous will be on tap and NoDa cans will also be available.
Windy Hill Cider Tasting – Sat Sept 5th 2-4PM
Carolina Beer Temple will be hosting a hard cider tasting featuring the fine ciders of Windy Hill Orchard out of York, SC. We will have two ciders on tap, plus additional flavors to sample!
Live Music – Sat Sept 5th – 2-4PM
Carolina Beer Temple will be hosting live music from 2-4PM during our Windy Hill Cider event!
Asheville Brewing Tap Takeover – Sat Sept 5th 6PM-Close
Carolina Beer Temple will be featuring FOUR beers from Asheville Brewing Company on Saturday Sept 5th starting at 6PM. Flights will be available featuring each of the Asheville Brewing beers – Ninja Porter, Shiva IPA, Rocket Girl Blonde ale and Fire Escape Jalapeno Pale Ale

On Labor Day Monday Matthews Station Street (immediately in front of Carolina Beer Temple) will be closed off for the Matthews Auto Reunion & Motorcycle show featuring new cars classic cars, motorcycles and more! The event is FREE!
